Building a Better Die Handle [to Use Cheap, Terrible Dies] (Mini Projects)
I've had a pair of Harbor Freight tap and die sets for years, and the taps are... functional, but the dies have gone largely unused because the die handles that the sets come with are downright trash. There are better wrenches for round dies out there, but with variances in metric and standard sizing it is hard to know what is going to work with what! On top of that, they are all missing a few features I'd like to see and, worst of all, they cost money! So, we're going to dig through the parts bins and find a way to make one ourselves. What could go wrong?

1996 Jeep Cherokee Junkyard Lift Kit Part 2 - Coil Springs, Brakes, and Tires (XJ Ep.10)
Просмотров 36 тыс.Месяц назад
After delays due to broken and stuck bolts, we are coming back to finish the suspension lift on Rob's Jeep Cherokee! The rear suspension is largely finished, but the front end needs springs and trailing arms to match. Plus, someone creates a brake fluid leak (completely unavoidable) which means that system is going to need more attention than expected. We have a lot to finish up and even more t...
1996 Jeep Cherokee Junkyard Lift Kit Part 1 - Retrieval and Install (XJ Ep.9)
Просмотров 34 тыс.Месяц назад
We've always wanted to lift Rob's Jeep Cherokee, but finding the money for parts that aren't strictly necessary is a challenge. Fortunately for us, a matching XJ showed up in a local junkyard with exactly the parts we were after! In this video, we'll pull the springs and other lifted suspension parts from the parts Jeep, and start the process of installing them on Rob's! Of course, nothing goes...
Building Extended Shackles, Modifying Polyurethane Bushings, Fitting Exhaust (78 Firebird Ep.39)
Просмотров 34 тыс.3 месяца назад
We lifted the suspension of this 1978 Firebird using S10 lift spindles in the front and modified leaf spring packs in the rear, but to get even more we used longer than stock shackles. In this episode we'll build stronger shackles to replace our mock-up ones, make them a bit more narrow by using custom bushings to help the exhaust fit, and get the intermediate pipes back in place to rebuild the...
Finishing the Front Suspension Lift with Spacers, Tires, and Brakes (78 Firebird Ep.38)
Просмотров 44 тыс.4 месяца назад
After modifying Chevy S10 lift spindles to fit on our Firebird we managed to get it back to sitting on its own suspension, but there was still a lot left unfinished. This time we're tackling a few important things, mostly focused on the front suspension, that we'll need to get this car back on the road. We'll need wheel spacers to keep the wheels and tires away from the spindles, tires to make ...
Using Aftermarket S10 Spindles to Lift a 78 Firebird (How and Why) (Ep.37)

This car has been a huge project recently, and not just the engine swap aspect that we have been covering but a fair amount of suspension work as well. I decided that I wanted a little more height out of the suspension and had an idea of how to do it in a somewhat unusual way, which has not been without challenges but it has been an interesting puzzle to try to figure out along the way. Harbor Freight Engine Stand Mods (Reinforcement, Brakes, Handle, and More!)
Просмотров 81 тыс.9 месяцев назад
In 2017 we needed an engine stand so we went and bought the cheapest one we could find, which ended up being a Harbor Freight Pittsburgh 69520. It was a little rough around the edges but got the job done, and has served us well in the years since then. We have been modifying it now and then to fix small problems or add features, but it's about time to go through with a bunch of ideas and try to...
1996 Jeep Cherokee Differential Reseal and Ignition System Tune-up (Ep.8)
Просмотров 36 тыс.10 месяцев назад
After the gas tank replacement the Jeep Cherokee was doing very well, enough so that it seemed worth fixing some of the smaller issues. First up is the gear oil it was constantly leaking from the rear axle, and the water that may or may not have gotten inside of it from that point. We'll refinish the diff covers and refill both axles, and then replace the usual plugs/wires/cap/rotor to give the...
454 Engine Swap: Installing Big Block Engine and Supercharger (78 Firebird Ep.36)
Просмотров 68 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Now that the old engine is out of the car, we should have plenty of space for the Big Block Chevy 454 we have been rebuilding! It may not be quite as easy as dropping it into the engine bay, but we will make it happen one way or another. Then, we will get our rebuilt B&M 250 supercharger installed along with the carburetors and engine accessories. Also, I forgot to include the part number in th...

It is finally time to get back to work on the car itself instead of prepping the new engine for it, and first off we'll have to make some room for all of that! We'll start off with a wash and retrospective on the small block 350 that was in the car when I bought it nine years ago and then get right to work on removing it. Then there are a bunch of little things to do while the engine bay is emp...

Просмотров 47 тыс.Год назад
We are re-using the factory flexplate, but it is a bit of a problem since I want to bolt it to a torque converter with a different bolt pattern than what it came with. The converter has a 10 3/4” pattern while the flexplate is 11 1/2”, but that won't be a problem because we have a drill press and files to slot the mounting holes. Then, we'd better figure out a starter that is going to turn this...

We will be installing special vacuum canister lids to synchronize the secondaries, boost referencing the power valves, and bending...

We're in the process of getting our rebuilt 454 engine ready to install, and this time we have a lot of small things to work on. The “adjustment screws” you mention on the wrenches you show that can be bought are for spilt dies, they’re used for opening and closing the dies a little to fine tune your threads. They’re not for gripping different size dies, which is what I think you think they’re for.

One of my mad-scientist ideas was welding two tabs on a nut to hold the flats of the die holder so that a socket/ratchet could be used with it, but that one seemed like maybe a step too far. Ratcheting would be nice for cleaning threads though! I have a set of thread chasers I use very frequently but sometimes a fastener needs a little more help.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects

That is sometimes true, but not always (as far as I can tell). Some hexagonal dies are marketed as "thread cutting" and some are marketed as "rethreading", but it's possible the info from the manufacturers just isn't clear. I can say for sure that I've cut threads in hardened bolts and round stock with hex dies just fine, at least.

I'm glad I can be there for you! The 91 Firebird is a bit of a long story and I don't want to share everything just yet, but basically it ended up sitting because the fuel/brake lines really needed to be replaced and I couldn't get the ignition timing advance to work for the life of me. Last fall I decided to tear into it and make a few big changes and got a ton of work done, but (like I do) I never finished it after I ran into a few problems I didn't have any time/energy left to deal with. I had plans to fix it this Spring but ended up getting pretty sick for three weeks precisely when I had planned to do the work, and I've been playing catch-up since then and haven't gotten around to working on any of the cars unfortunately.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects 2 дня назад

It was sold as a VEVOR 7"x14" but it's pretty much the same as most of the generic ones you see online, it just happened to pop up on sale with free shipping and was the cheapest option for me. I have broken some plastic gear teeth or something in it (had to edit the clunking out of the audio in this video) but it's currently still kicking and pretty much everything can be replaced/upgraded on these which is neat. Not really powerful enough for fast cuts or big steel parts, but it's been really fun and educational and it's way less likely to rip my arm off when I do something stupid compared to a big lathe.
